Galli, born Anna-Gabriele Müller in 1944, has built a distinctive practice marked by the visceral energy of her figures and her exploration of the body as a site of tension and transformation. Trained in West Berlin under the influence of artists like Martin Engelmann, Galli’s work emerged amidst the political and social upheaval of the 1970s and 80s. Her art tackles the battlefield of the body, capturing violent and often contorted forms that speak to a world in flux. Over the years, Galli’s paintings, often created with bold, rapid brushstrokes and vivid colours, have attracted growing attention, particularly for their anti-heroic, genderless characters that challenge traditional notions of representation.

The exhibition spans several decades of Galli’s practice, showcasing her progression from large-scale, physical paintings in the 1980s and 90s to more intimate works exploring domestic spaces. These later pieces blur the line between object and subject, suggesting both the safety and the claustrophobia of home. Galli’s works frequently incorporate text in a Dadaist manner, drawing from literary influences and pushing boundaries between visual art and written language. Despite a career marked by periods of reduced visibility, her work has gained renewed recognition in recent years. So, So, So will mark a significant moment in the artist’s growing legacy.

Date: 7 February - 24 May 2025. Location: GOLDSMITHS CCA, St James’, New Cross, London SE14 6AD. Price: Free. goldsmithscca.art.
