Long & Ryle proudly presents A Life Painting by the acclaimed American Armenian artist Maro Gorky. This exhibition marks a joyous celebration of Gorky's life and work, coinciding with her 80th birthday.
Long & Ryle is presenting A Life Painting, the first retrospective exhibition of American Armenian artist Maro Gorky to coincide with her 80th birthday. The exhibition features a selection of oils, watercolours, and works on paper, showcasing her bold use of colours that depict the Tuscan countryside where she has lived with her husband for 50 years. The exhibition also reflects her artistic journey from early romantic landscapes to abstract patterns.
Gorky's father, Arshile Gorky, was a celebrated Armenian artist and one of the originators of Abstract Expressionism, which influenced her artistic style. Gorky studied under Frank Auerbach at the Slade School of Art before moving to Tuscany with her husband in 1968. She frescoed the walls of their farmhouse with animals, plants, and patterns, and the surrounding garden has become as much a creative endeavor as her paintings.
The Tuscan landscape has a deep-seated impact on Gorky's artwork, as it has become inextricably linked to her and her husband's life and creative endeavours. Despite the lonely path of being an artist, Gorky remains true to herself, and the exhibition is a celebration of her life and work.
