This April, an important body of work by the Ugandan artist and researcher Dr. Lilian Nabulime goes on display at Somerset House. The showcase, titled Embodying Social Being, presents sculptures that juxtapose reclaimed monumental tree parts with found and recycled materials such as soda cans, chains and plastic. Reclamation, recycling and working with found objects crafted by local artisans have been fundamental to her practice, allowing her to fold the stories behind these objects and their symbolisms into her works.

Since the 1990s, Dr. Nabulime has crafted a body of work recording the societal pressures and their effects on women and children that is unique in its honesty and tenderness. The artist explores and addresses complex familial and social relations, stigmas around HIV infections and the experiences of young women on campus at Makerere University where she is a senior lecturer.
