#FLOFavourite: this weekend in arts (20th - 22nd September 2019)

Not sure what to do this weekend? Head to one of these interesting exhibitions.

Somerset House – The Embankment Galleries

Exhibition: The Art and Science of LifeWear

Date: 17th -22nd September 2019

Time: 10 am- 7pm ( open till 9pm on 20th September)

Price: Free

UNIQLO, the Japanese global apparel retailer has put together an impressive immersive exhibition exploring LifeWear from three prospectives, Art, Science, Craftsmanship London.

What is LifeWear?

‘LifeWear is clothing designed to make everyone’s life better. It is simple, high-quality, everyday clothing with a practical sense of beauty ingenious in detail, thought through with life’s needs in mind and always evolving.’

The exhibition captures the steps UNIQLO have taken within their business model to embrace innovation and sustainability. Showcasing examples of technological innovation, the manufacturing process and they have created an immersive space to convey the science element through HEATTEACH and WHOLEGARMENT, who have set the standards for how clothing can be made, with their three-dimensional silhouettes in seam-free knitwear.

What we love most, the exhibition has a whole area dedicated to the companies sustainability efforts, you will discover the development of the companies recycling programme and its partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In celebration of London Fashion Week, you can purchase exclusive collaboration items from the pop-up store at the end of the exhibition. The exclusive collaboration is in partnership with online radio station NTS.

The exhibition is hugely informative and heavily touches on the significance of sustainable fashion. It will probably take you an hour or 2 to get through the exhibition, but worth every minute!

#FLOFavourite: We love the 50 Colours of Socks room, it is one of the last areas of the exhibition. Be sure not to miss it!

Date: 28th August – 6th October 2019

Time: 11 am-7 pm (9 pm on Thursdays)

This is the first UK solo exhibition of the late South African photographer Thabiso Sekgala, featuring 49 photographs taken between 2009-2014 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany and Jordan. The exhibition features pieces from Sekgala’s successful series Homeland ( 2009-2011), which features photographs taken in Bophuthatswana and KwaNdebele, territories that were established by the apartheid government to house black South Africans who were forced out of urban areas. The exhibition displays images of the landscape, local architecture and members of the ‘born-free generation’ those born after SouthAfrica’s first democratic elections in 1994. Also featured are some of his later works from Running Bulawayo, Running Amman and Paradise (2013), taken in Zimbabwe, Jordan and Germany, exploring displacement migration and the pursuit of unattainable ideals.

The exhibition is located in the Hayward Gallery’s HENI Project Space, it is a fairly small space however there are many images to view.

#FLOFavourite: Sekgala’s work is about more than just photography. The simplicity of his photography speaks to deeper issues, unravelling these issues is the beauty of his work for us.
