How to spend 48 hours in Paris

London offers the advantage of having several fascinating European cities just a short trip away. Paris, only a 2-hour 20-minute train ride from King’s Cross St Pancras, is an excellent choice for a brief visit. With its rich art scene, dining options, and charming views, our guide will help you make the most of 48 hours in the French capital.

Art

Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou, located in Beaubourg in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, is renowned for its striking architecture by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, featuring colourful exposed pipes and a glass façade. Named after Georges Pompidou, the French President who commissioned its construction, it is, in our opinion, an essential stop on any trip to Paris. Beyond its impressive design, the Centre houses the National Museum of Modern Art, which boasts one of Europe’s largest collections of modern art and frequently presents well-curated temporary exhibitions. Be sure to visit the sculpture garden at the entrance to the fourth-floor galleries, which features six works by Henri Laurens and one by Henry Moore. Additionally, enjoy the views from the rooftop terrace.

Bourse de Commerce

The renovated historic building now functions as a contemporary art museum, showcasing exhibitions from the Pinault Collection. Its circular design and ornate 19th-century architecture create a striking contrast with the modern art inside. The building also features a glass dome and a courtyard, offering a unique backdrop for art enthusiasts. The Bourse de Commerce has recently garnered significant attention on Instagram and TikTok, thanks to Kimsooja's popular mirror installation, To Breathe — Constellation. This piece is part of the broader exhibition Le monde comme il va (The World As It Goes),, which examines contemporary art's engagement with global issues from the 1980s to the present and includes works by Fischli & Weiss, Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, and Anne Imhof. The exhibition highlights the complex relationship between art and societal challenges. If you are planning a visit to Paris and this exhibition is no longer on view, don’t worry—the Bourse de Commerce will feature a host of exciting exhibitions from autumn through to 2025.

Its intimate setting provides a unique opportunity to explore Picasso's artistic evolution and personal life across various phases of his career. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts temporary exhibitions that offer in-depth insights into Picasso’s work or examine the influence of Picasso on other artists.

#FLODown: Known for its avant-garde approach, Palais de Tokyo is one of the largest centres for contemporary art in Europe. The museum hosts a rotating selection of exhibitions that push the boundaries of contemporary art and culture. Its raw, industrial architecture adds to the edgy atmosphere, and the museum often features performances and installations that engage directly with visitors.

Views of Paris

Montparnasse Tower

The Montparnasse Tower is the tallest building in Paris's city centre, standing in striking contrast to the city's historically low skyline. From its 59th-floor terrace, there are breathtaking 360-degree views of Paris. The view is particularly remarkable at sunset and equally impressive in the evening, with the illuminated Eiffel Tower in sight.

Seine River Tour

A Seine River cruise provides a leisurely way to view Paris’s iconic landmarks. As Paris is a relatively low-lying city, one of the main highlights of the cruise is the striking view of the Eiffel Tower. Other landmarks you’ll see on such a cruise include Notre-Dame Cathedral and the elegant Pont Alexandre III bridge. We recommend a sunset cruise; however, a romantic evening cruise is also an equally worthwhile experience.

We used a Go City Pass to enjoy a Seine River tour and visit the Montparnasse Tower. Their 2-day all-inclusive pass allows you to book up to three experiences. Other options include wine tasting or enjoying a bird's-eye view of Paris from a hot air balloon with Ballon de Paris Generali.
