Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

Open to the public for the first time in over three years. Pitzhanger is the picturesque country home of renowned architect Sir John Soane’s and home to a contemporary art gallery.

In a project led by Ealing Council in collaboration with Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Trust, has undergone a three-year conservation project to restore the property to Soane’s original design.Built in the 1800s, and designed by Soane himself, the property features canopy domed ceilings, classic detailing, decorative paint schemes, and tall ceilings. Pitzhanger features many architectural elements that Soane adapted for his later buildings including Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The restoration has reinstated elements of the property previous demolished, namely the conservatory overlooking the beautiful Walpole Park. Throughout the manor paint schemes have been meticulously recreated, following detailed historic paint analysis by interior decoration specialists Hare & Humphreys.

The conservation and restoration project was led by architects Jestico + Whiles with the support of heritage experts Julian Harrap Architects. They were supported by a large team of specialist contractors, led by Quinn London Ltd. Craftspeople from across the UK lent their skills to reinstating Soane’s intricate and idiosyncratic designs, from stone carving to Chinese wallpaper, landscaping to glass.

#FLODown: The restoration of Pizthanger Manor & Gallery has restored the property to its former glory, with the reinstatement of elements such as the conservatory and detailed hand-painted wallpapers, it is worth a visit to observe the architectural works of Soane. The Art gallery which whilst small in size delivers on quality with the featured works of renowned artist.

Previous exhibitions?
