Talking about Brexit etiquette
It’s clear that Brexit is not going to plan but it somehow still seems to be a topic of endless conversation. In the workplace, at the dinner table and even at your blessed Thursday night drinks! When will it end?
When discussing Brexit amongst colleagues, family or friends it is understandable that everyone wants to avoid tarnishing relationships. And so, this is our guide to having a very sensible and civilised Brexit discussion – for people on every side of the argument.
Fact check
Unless you are the Chancellor of the Exchequer (which would be highly unlikely as there is only one) and have an in-depth knowledge of British Government and budgets, please refrain from spreading inaccuracies. For example, the fantastically exaggerated claim that ‘we give the EU £350 million a week’.
Exercise some responsibility in the things you say. If you don’t know where your information is coming from then perhaps do some research first – you wouldn’t want to become an honorary member of Donald Trump’s ‘fake news club’.
Remain calm
Get passionate by all means but try to refrain from getting angry or name-calling.
The way you handle a debate often determines whether people really listen to your point or not. It’s easy to get frustrated, especially with politics but unfortunately, when you start swearing and shouting it really makes your stance look less credible.
Listen
Listen to other people’s points before dismissing or interjecting, and most importantly, respect their opinions too.
If you think your friend’s decision to vote to leave the EU is daft and unsubstantiated perhaps listen to the reasons for their argument. Equally, if you think their decision to vote to stay in the EU is misguided, listen to the reasons.
Whether you voted to leave or remain, everyone has a right to vote according to what they think is right. Respect their opinion however baffled you may be by it.
Retreat when necessary
Acknowledge when you are not going to reach common ground with someone and agree to disagree! It is a waste of energy and precious time on our burning planet when neither of you will comprise on your ideas.
The best form of protection is abstinence…?
Abstaining from debating all together is an option that many help to avoid the drama and inevitable disagreements. Brexit has really opened a can of worms…
