Celebrate Epiphany with the Galette des Rois at The Connaught Patisserie throughout January
The Connaught Patisserie in Mayfair offers a reimagined Galette des Rois throughout January, a traditional French pastry celebrating the Epiphany.
Galette des Rois has been served by the French since the 14th century and is traditionally served on the 6th of January (12 days after Christmas) to celebrate The Epiphany โ a religious feast day commemorating the journey made by the Three Kings to the manger where Jesus was born. The day is a time of joy and reflection with friends and family.
This exquisite pastry features delicate, golden layers of buttery puff pastry encasing an almond frangipane. Before baking, a fรจve (a small trinket) is hidden within, often an almond or a figurine representing baby Jesus. The lucky finder is crowned King or Queen for the day, donning a regal paper crown with good luck bestowed for the year.
Traditions vary widely across cultures, but in many countries, people bake special cakes such as the Kingโs cake (in the United States), La Rosca de Reyes (in Mexico), or Vasilopita (in Greece). Across London, many bakeries are offering Galettes des Rois.
We headed to The Connaught Patisserie in Mayfair to try visionary French chef Nicolas Rouzaudโs Galette des Rois reimagined with a fresh, symbolic design. The galette features a delicate pattern inspired by seasonal wildflowers, celebrating new life and renewal, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of Epiphany and the start of a new year. Hidden within is the traditional fรจve โ a cherished Connaughty Hound token symbolising fortune and tradition. The galette was delicious with its buttery and light puff pastry and perfectly balanced, subtly sweet frangipane. Ordering one here promises to be a highlight of your celebrations.
The Connaught Patisserie Galette des Rois is available to order until the 31st of January and is priced at ยฃ50. During this period, individual slices will also be offered, priced at ยฃ7.50 for takeaway or ยฃ9 for dining in.
